Treating Sports Injuries Correctly – Back to Activity Quickly

Sport keeps us fit and is enjoyable – but also carries the risk of injury. From simple muscle soreness to cruciate ligament tears: those who respond correctly to the first pain signal can avoid long-term damage and return to sport more quickly.

The Most Common Sports Injuries

  • Muscle tear and strain: Due to overexertion or insufficient warm-up
  • Ankle ligament tear: The most common sports injury – often from rolling the ankle
  • Cruciate ligament tear: Especially in contact sports and rapid changes of direction
  • Meniscus tear: Frequently from rotational movements of the knee under load
  • Stress fractures: Overload fractures from repetitive strain
  • Tennis elbow (epicondylitis): Overuse of the forearm musculature

Immediate Action: The RICE Rule

For acute sports injuries, the proven RICE rule applies:

  • Rest – stop the sport immediately
  • Ice – cool the injury (never directly on the skin)
  • Compression – apply a compression bandage
  • Elevation – elevate the affected body part

Modern Treatment in Orthopaedics

After a precise diagnosis (clinical examination, ultrasound, MRI if necessary), we develop an individual therapy plan at our practices in Düsseldorf. Depending on the injury, conservative measures (physiotherapy, orthoses, injections) or surgical procedures (e.g., arthroscopic cruciate ligament or meniscus reconstruction) are used.

The goal is always the fastest possible and complete return to sporting activity – with consideration for safe and sustainable healing.
